Artist Statement

For the last few years, my work has been divided into two areas, functional vessels and decorative/sculptural tiles.

My functional work draws on a wide variety of sources: Byzantine architecture Cycladic art, tin lunchboxes, commercial plastics and on and on . I love objects that have character that can only come with age, but I also appreciate the beauty in the new. While my work may not be drawing obviously on a specific object, hopefully the synthesis of historical and contemporary sensibilities yields an interesting product.

The tiles are an ongoing project whose subject matter varies. Lately they have focused primarily on the role of consumerism in our or more specifically my life. In this particular series, this notion is embodied by both the idea and actual word "more" and the notion of "habits to avoid."
